I’ve had a rod in my hands since before I could read. My earliest memories are of Florida docks: legs dangling over the edge, bluegill nibbling, and a little boy who would soon outgrow his Zebco 33. When my family moved to Texas, fishing wasn’t a hobby – it was survival. I pulled crawdads from creeks for dinner and chased largemouth across lakes, learning how weather, weeds, and water color changed the bite.Later on, I traded the rod for a hammer during the week and a bass boat on weekends. As a carpenter and contractor restoring Victorian homes in San Francisco, I developed a craftsman’s eye for detail. Weekends were spent on the California Delta, where I chased bass with spinnerbaits and worms like everyone else. Then one day on the Delta, everything changed. An older gentleman approached my boat and asked what I’d been throwing. “Spinnerbaits and worms,” I replied. He smiled and challenged me to spend the entire day with nothing but a jig. At the time, I didn’t know it was Dee Thomas (the godfather of flipping), but I took his advice. That day I watched a jig with a hand tied skirt fall through heavy grass, flare and pulse just like a crawfish, and then disappear into the mouth of a huge largemouth bass. After that fight, I became obsessed with the versatility and big fish appeal of jigs. The problem was that mass produced jigs on the market didn’t match the local environment or withstand heavy cover. So I put my builder hands to work and started tuning weed-guards, and tying skirts to fit specific water conditions. That tinkering paid off, helping my partner and me land a 28-pound tournament bag.Today, as I teach my young son how to cast and watch his fear turn to pride as he holds his first of many bass, I feel the rush of my Delta days. This is what motivated me to start Hawg Ripper Jigs.HawgRipper brings decades of experience to serious anglers who demand more than mass-produced tackle.
